Teaching and Healing StoriesMy own experiences with Rubenfeld Synergy have shown me how transformative this work can be. The process involves gentle touch, imagery and movement as well as intense listening on the part of the Synergist with no judgment, just acceptance. What a gift!
"Healing Journeys" presents a wide variety of issues and kinds of clients. There is something here for everyone to identify with and learn from. With 40 different authors, the writing is uneven, but, for the most part, highly readable.
Inspiring Stories of HealingI appreciated not having to read anything technical or theoretical; I enjoyed getting to understand Rubenfeld Synergy by reading many people's personal experiences. And what a variety of experiences! Childhood traumas, performance anxiety, devastating injuries, sexual problems, the suicide of a child, depression, and Alzheimer's are only some of the troubles the protagonists were facing when they first tried Rubenfeld Synergy.
Instead of viewing themselves as victims, the people in these stories learn to take responsibility for healing themselves. "Healing Journeys" reminded me a lot of Naomi Rachel Remen's "Kitchen Table Wisdom," in that people find the source of healing within themselves.
I could personally relate to these stories. I came away feeling that "Healing Journeys" includes stories for everyone, not just for people already interested in the body-mind connection. Now I have a good idea of how I might benefit from trying Rubenfeld Synergy or other body-mind approaches to healing.

You won't put it down
Excellent guide to the immune system & its supporting herbs. This book is good for anyone who would like more background in the workings of the immune system (including health care professionals who know the physiology but are not used to thinking of immune function as a system) At least a quarter of the book is dedicated to the functioning of the immune system, covering technical material in prose ranging from humorous to stunningly beautiful. He has a gift for chosing just the right metaphor to explain difficult concepts.
In the section titled "Protective Powers: the Healing Power of Snot" he describes the IgA-saturated mucous secretions as a "sophisticated, genetically enginee! ! red antibiotic paste that is tailored to whatever infection is current." The antibodies carried in the mucus are produced in immediate response to current infections in the body and will attack them while protecting your tissues. In other words, don't try to stop your running nose!
One reason for tasting herbs- indeed holding them in your mouth for a while before swallowing- is that lymph nodes are located just behind the tongue. Echinacea for instance works best to stimulate lymphatic activity, but first it must get to the lymphatic system. Lymph, unlike blood, does not have a pump to circulate herbal factors. So if it lands in your stomach in a capsule, the herb may not get to the lymphatic system where it is needed- or at least may arrive ineffectively. (This is aside from taste preparing your liver to utilize herbs.)
The book also covers the titular herbs in detail, with emphasis on proper use, situations where they are inappropriately applied (90% of the tim! ! e for goldenseal) and when alternatives to the endangered g! oldenseal can be used. For example, he shows that goldenseal should NOT be taken when you are coming down with a flu or cold, although echinacea might be quite effective. Oregon grape OTOH is quite useful at that time, as a berberine-containing substitute for... echinacea. Goldenseal probably has no effective substitute when a long term cold or respiratory infection starts to turn bacterial, with yellow or green mucus because the hydrastine works directly upon the mucosal secretions. And goldenseal works NO better in large doses than small doses- as single capsule or half-dropper of tincture is all you will need for a dose.
The book covers a number of alternatives to echinacea and goldenseal, shows unusual uses for them and gives recipes. It is well worth adding to your herbal bookshelf.
An excellent buy

great scientifically based book for everyoneThe book is filled with poignant personal stories that help illustrate the scientific findings. The stories are of depression, alcoholism, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and other medical conditions. One such story is of Morty, a man who had been walking around with an blood alcohol level of 3.5. Morty was delivered to a detoxication unit where he stopped drinking on the first day of arrival and had an almost painless physical withdrawal from alcohol because he believed in the grace of God. Each story is as heartwarming and as inspiring as the one before. I loved how these stories were so smoothly used in adjunct with the scientific findings. It is definitely an effective blend of real life to which we all can relate and science from which we all can learn.
Another great thing about this book is that at the very end it offers suggestions to how one can benefit from the Power of faith. It is separated into three different parts: 1) if you are already religious, 2) if you are not religious, and 3) if you simply are not yet ready to consider religion. This is very nice because it offers suggestions for everyone not only those who are religious and are already benefiting.
A definite plus to this book is that is it easy reading. Although it deals with real scientific research the entire book is very readable. One does not get bored with scientific jargon. In fact the book is very engaging and I finished it in one night. I definitely recommend this book for anyone who is interested in this subject. We all can learn from it, religious people and atheists alike.
